Re: George RR Martin - when did his writing go downhill?

The fourth book has a lot of detractors - I definitely agree that it was a misstep to introduce a bunch of POV characters in new locations, and especially to use lots of them and give them only a chapter or two each. It's too far into the series to tamper with the narrative structure that worked so ...

Unrest in the Middle East

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-12480844 I assume people have been following the wave of unrest, demonstrations and outright revolutions across the Middle East and North Africa, which seems to have been wholly unanticipated both there and in the West (as discussed in this article - http:...

Re: What are you currently reading?

Tom, you never like the stuff I like. :P I really enjoyed Last & First Men - I agree that it's a bit dry and essay-like, but it's not really a novel as such. I liked the 'near-future' history part near the beginning because it starts out completely wrong (accidental war between the UK and France...

Magical Girl Academy Blues: A Tale of Chaos City

This pastiche/affectionate parody of anime (and other) cliches/tropes started life as a bit of backstory for a character in an RPG that never got off the ground. Otaku Bill, Fr4gm4st3r, Bob the Mighty and Jack Daisuke Brain-Harvester-1000 the Third are also based on character concepts from said RPG ...

People with a sense of humour vs. the "God Hates Fags" crowd

The Westboro Baptist Church , infamous for picketing military funerals and the like, have started attracting counter-protesters, as seen at these two links: http://www.slightlywarped.com/crapfactory/curiosities/2010/nerds_vs_idiots.htm http://laughingsquid.com/san-franciscos-answer-to-westboro-bapti...

Re: What are you currently reading?

I read a whole bunch of books over the Christmas holidays and before, including: -Surface Detail by Iain M. Banks (very good, one of the best of his Culture novels) -The Evolutionary Void by Peter F. Hamilton (good, but not as good as some of his others - a bit of a weak ending to a trilogy of doors...

Re: Sucker Punch

I must concur in all particulars. :D

From what I read on Wikipedia, it sounds like all the fantastical stuff is sorta-maybe in the protagonist's head. It's like...a manga version of Inception. :D

Re: Star Wars: Prequel Trilogy

I saw an interesting documentary called "The People vs George Lucas" a while ago that (along with featuring a lot of fun footage of fan films, conventions, people sounding off etc.) raised some quite interesting points about the reasons for the fan backlash towards the prequels and the ear...

Re: Fantasy books you'd like to see made into movies

Has Wizard's First Rule been made? I think it would be awesome, along with some of the Pern books. There's a TV series, Legend of the Seeker , which is based on Terry Goodkind's books. The Pern books would be interesting - there's too many to film them all, but you could make a trilogy out of the m...

Re: What are you currently reading?

Keith, I thought you gave up on WoT? :P I did, but I read some good things on TV Tropes about what happened in the 12th book, so I bit the bullet and picked up a second-hand copy when I found one. I wasn't disappointed - the plot is finally moving again. Rand even kills at least one of the Forsaken...

Code Geass fanfiction

I have no idea whether anyone here watched or even knows of the anime series Code Geass , but on the off-chance, here are three ongoing fanfics I've written for it: Code Geass: Children of the Revolution AU. Don't you hate it when you're having a nice game of Take Over The World with your friends an...

Re: Dystopian Future Fiction

One which hasn't been mentioned yet but deserves to be is Aldous Huxley's Brave New World. I think it's one of the most chilling of all dystopias because it keeps its citizens docile not through fear but through pleasure, which is arguably much more realistic and relevant.
