My grandpa would have loved this week. He drove trains from 1916 to 1963!

I love trains! It's my favorite mode of transport. Especially steam engines, oh they rule; that plume of smoke, those wheels chugging and the moan of the whistle in middle of the night - that's the stuff of dreams, they are so beautiful. And one of the first vinyl 45s I owned had The Fox on one side, and Casey Jones on the other - not to be confused with the Grateful Dead's "Casey Jones" or Kristofferson's "Casey's Last Ride", though all three songs are about the same guy. That's three songs, that I know of! And you can't say that about John Henry.

My grandpa liked them too, and said that diesels were "heartless". He drove the steams as long as he could into the late 50's until the Chicago Northwestern retired them. He drove diesel switchers after that before retiring.
