The Anglo Saxon Chronicle

Postby TomCotton » Mon Nov 29, 2010 5:40 pm

I am currently reading the Anglo Saxon Chronicle and am at the year 1087 when William I (William the Conqueror) died. What strike me is the way his burial is described:
"Alas! how false and how uncertain is this world's weal!
He that was before a rich king, and lord of many lands, had not
then of all his land more than a space of seven feet! and he
that was whilom enshrouded in gold and gems, lay there covered
with mould!"

Ol' Bill didn't seem to be very popular with the Anglo Saxon scribes. :)

Oh, Horrible Histories had a gleeful time describing his solemn, dignified funeral.

Yep, that was a good story, but I've discovered that William was "resurrected" twice after his burial. Interesting stuff!
