The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey - 1st Trailer

Postby Withywindle » Wed Dec 21, 2011 7:38 am

The main thing that struck me with it was how well they have done with the song!!!

Dear Mister Fantasy play us a tune / Something to make us all happy / Do anything to take us out of this gloom / Sing a song, play guitar / Make it snappy ...

That does not look too bad. Missed the colorful hoods, though. :D
Still wonder what material is being used to produce two movies. Maybe some White Council stuff away from the main quest in the book.
Looked like a little Gandalf/Galadriel luving going on. Good ol' PJ.

Thank you for the You Tube, Withy! I really love the way it looks, and the song is just beautiful.

I am so excited! Martin Freeman is very Tookish; Ian McKellen and Andy Serkis are back! Must make room for dwarf figurezzzz, Precious :D!

Take a look at this: http://insidemovies.ew.com/2012/04/24/c ... he-hobbit/

Do we want to see The Hobbit in HD or do we prefer glowing cinematography?

OOOOO! Love that - thanks, Candy!

That pic reminds me of those beautiful calendars that came out in the 70's. There was a pair of brothers that did them, and I can't find the names...

You know, I can't help wondering when making these movies PJ also seeks to give homage to folks that did all that incredible work like Alan Lee, and the Hildebrandts, and Ralph Bakshi. The first time my husband and I decided to see Bakshi's LOTR, we couldn't get over how much Jackson's Frodo was like Ralph's in youth and attitude. And then you see those incredible sights of Rivendale, the dwarvish runes all over the walls of Moria - the main gate of Osgiliath with all its figures alone - but The Hobbit isn't like that.

They spend so much time in the elements in this, and when they do run into other characters, they're giant spiders, trolls, goblins, wood elves and barrow wrights, not to mention Bombadil, Goldberry, and Beorn...

Nobody remembers the distant past - at least not in the Shire, those guys are gossiping over beer about the Brandybuck-Baggins marriage and which one pulled who from the boat into the river. The hobbits are clueless about the danger beyond their borders and that they're being protected by the Rangers, like the quaint little endangered species they are, the Elves are figuring that it's about time they consider leaving and all the Dwarves want is their stuff back from Smaug.

Go back and read the stuff people said about 'Rings' - there was a lot of doubt this was gonna fly and plenty of reasons to think so at the time. I for one don't think I'll be disappointed.

I've read a lot of criticism of PJ but fail to see how anyone else could have achieved what he did. I was upset to learn that he might not be the one to direct The Hobbit and jumped for joy when it was announced that he would do it after all. He's the right man for the job.

The first thing I think I noticed was that PJ has been putting on weight again, like when LOTR was in production. He loves these books, and I think it takes an emotional toll on him that his other works don't. As an emotional eater myself, I identify - completely.

I agree, Candy. He is the right man for the job. He even got me over Glorfindel!

I had to read the books to realise that Glorfindel had a role to play. However, he just pops in and out of the narrative and if you don't want a film that needs to be shown in five parts, you need to cut out all the incidental bit part players.

On another note, I'd love to have a go at writing the screenplay for the Silmarillion.

That's true of Glorfindel. He basically shows up with Asfoloth, and the horse carries Frodo to Rivendell ahead of the others - which I missed more, because he confronts the Nazgul all alone at the river. But I do love how it all works in film. It's much more exciting to see Arwen outwit & run those guys, and it does make her a much more fitting mate to Aragorn - at least I think so.

It's amazing how much was stripped away in terms of bodies (wasn't there some Prince So-and-so who came to Helms Deep - or was it Gondor? Can't remember.) As you go through The Two Towers, there was so much that the four hobbits contributed as individuals, and that's all there.

I feel really bad. For the life of me I've never been able to get past a few pages of The Silmarillion. It's over on my bookcase about as mint as the day I bought it. So is The Children of Huran, in its beautiful hard-bound cover. My problem is that the Silmarillion has all of these characters that I can't keep straight, and it reads to me like a very dry history.

I just had a thought. Maybe if I take down my husband's chess board and use the pieces as props, it might help me to follow better :).
