Thor - The Dark World

Postby Halasian » Fri Nov 15, 2013 1:53 pm

Was trying to decide if Thor - The Dark World was Sci-Fi or Fantasy. Since the Fantasy forum is filled with P.J. Hobbitry, I'll put this here.

This movie was kind of a mashup of Lord of the Rings meets Star Trek with a touch of Stargate. It was rather entertaining though, which was better than what my hopes had for it going in. The baddies didn't seem to project their badness too well though, and there were some points later in the story that got somewhat predictable. Still, worth seeing.

I didn't see the first one, but I am considering this - have been ever since the hubby pointed out Tom Hiddleston, was Loki :) .

I want to talk about this apology and why I like it so much. I know in some circles it’s held against Thor and dismissed as a ‘fauxpology’ because it doesn’t acknowledge any specifics. I disagree with this view.

Let’s remember what’s going on in this setting. Thor has been stripped off his powers, his immortality, and banished from his home because of his actions on Jotunheim. He’s been isolated from that home and its goings-on, save for Loki showing up and telling him ‘dad’s dead, you’re banished forever’. His friends have just showed up, told him Loki lied, and now the Destroyer is there attacking this small town and its innocent residents.

Thor can, and should, be excused for not having the slightest clue what hell’s going on and what his brother is doing.

He only knows his brother lied to him and is now doing this. He doesn’t know why. Thor does not know what happened to Loki on Jotunheim. Thor does not know Loki found out this terrible secret that has traumatized him. Thor does not know Loki was handed absolute power on the heels of that trauma that he was in no way prepared for. Thor does not know Loki’s scheming has been steadily blowing up in his face since the day of Thor’s failed coronation and that a few people back home have been figuring it out and turning on him. Thor doesn’t know any of this. He’s operating in a knowledge vacuum.

And yet, when his younger brother sends the Destroyer down to Midgard to attack the town Thor lives in - Thor assumes it must be *his* fault. He assumes he must have done *something* to drive Loki to these actions.

Spoiler alert: it isn’t and he hasn’t.

Please keep in mind Loki is not doing any of this because big brother dissed his magic or snapped at him in the midst of a tense situation. Loki is doing this because it’s his world that’s crumbling away under his feet and it was his own machinations that kick-started it (the tragedy of Loki’s downfall is a post for another time). He’s angry at his parents, he’s angry at Thor’s friends who won’t listen to him, he’s angry at Thor. Loki’s just angry at everyone. He has a right to be angry. He has a right to be hurt. But Loki being Loki needs to blame everyone else for his problems and lash out at others. But he is lashing out and hurting people who don’t deserve it and can’t fight back (see: all those innocent townspeople).

Enter Thor’s apology. Thor is assuming responsiblity for Loki’s actions. He is laying down a blanket apology as a way of assuming full blame. There are no specifics in his apology. Of course not. This isn’t happening because of any specific action on Thor’s part. This attack has little to do with Thor at all. It’s happening because of what has happened to Loki - and Thor knows nothing about any of that. And Thor tops it all off by offering Loki his life as penance (along with that heartbreaking little smile at the end that says ‘go ahead, it’s okay, i still love you’).

An apology that ends with the person giving it sacrificing their own life as a means to atone. I would call that a hard-core apology. And a sincere one.

If Loki had invaded in 2017

Loki: I am burdened with glorious purpose bla bla.
Fury: Wait, let's get one thing clear: Are you here to conquer us?
Loki: Um, yes?
Fury: Thank God. We surrender.
