There are only three more episodes left to the season (?)/series (?) as of last night.

It's so reckless, the road that the Norse Folk have taken, almost as if they're on suicide missions. I don't know the actual history of these times (and I don't think I want to), but at some point the raids all stop and the polytheism fades. And I know this because I can't remember the last time I had to dive into the root cellar to hide from these guys and their axes.

But as long as it's on TV, I don't want the saga to end :/ (I really want to see what becomes of Ragnar & Anslaug's youngest sons, Sigurd Snake-in-the-eye & Ivar the Boneless.)

Oh, how I hate that you're a whole season behind  ! I would really like to have a discussion about this show.

I keep thinking we should be absolutely global by now. That we can all see the same thing at the same time if we want to - I mean, with allowances for time zones, of course, so that within twenty-four hours, we're all down with what's happening in Kattegat, and Wessex, and Paris - OMG!!! Paris!!! Sheesh!!! Sorry for the run-on-sentence, but, Holy Millie, Hell's Bells, Goodness, Gracious me!!! I wish I had auditioned for Season 3 - even if it meant no lines, being dipped in Kensington gore and that I'm just a body floating at the bottom of one of Floki's ladders!!!

...and, also, if I could have one of those awesome hair dos, all twisty-braidy, floating sexily on the water, and a sword, and a shield of my very own, still clenched in my dead hands? And maybe have Ragnar say something nice about me - by name - now being in Valhalla, with all my warrior bros? Maybe even have Rollo glance upon my broken self with studly approval? :D ....

Well, Season 3 is over (Season 4 is coming in 2016), and I want to discuss this so much! It has seen a lot of change, and, at a couple of points, I wasn't sure that there wouldn't be at least a nod to the real history, in the case of Ragnar. But, there are things that I do feel comfortable talking about, things that make me love this show.

Again, the whole production was incredible. The values are extremely high, the writing is stellar, the characters are beautifully portrayed (the post-marital tension between Lagertha and Ragnar is always welcome; I don't know many couples who can confidently exchange barbs while toting broadswords.) Then there's the landscape, which like LOTR, adds so much to the story - like another character, it molds and shapes the way all of these Northern peoples have to live.

Some of my favorite parts are when things have settled down a bit, and Aslaug or some other mother, tuck in the kids and regal them with stories of Odin, Thor, Frigg, and Loki. Then there's the blind Seer and his inner visions for each member of Kattegat who come seeking answers.

It's going to be another long year (I will be checking out BBC-America's The Last Kingdom, I mean, it's Vikings, guys, how can I not?) Some of the same names, such as Ragnar, will appear in this, and it'll be interesting to see how it stands up over the eight episodes.

The Vikings has set a very high bar, imho, so I wish them well.

btw, Vikings showrunners, it would also be rad if you could depict some interactions between Ragnar’s people and the Finno-Ugric and especially Saami peoples, because that was a Really Big Thing.

We could say that since the Vikings who sacked England were Danes, then Ragnar’s homeland is therefore Denmark, and those other groups were primarily in Norway and Sweden (and Finland of course), but the show has consistently labeled Ragnar’s home as “Scandinavia” more broadly. It would make a lot of sense to have these other peoples depicted so that viewers could see that the Scandinavians weren’t the only ethnic group in that region. -

I've been watching season 3 rather haphazardly after the first few episodes. My PVR missed an episode when we were gone and there was a power outage when it was supposed to record, and then I watched one that was near the end of the season.

Do you have On Demand, Hal? I hope so, because you just have to see this whole thing. This has been the most heart-rending season (at least to me, because I love these characters, and whenever they have a bad day/battle, I feel for them, I really do.) There were three losses among the regular cast members *sigh*...

I managed to get it via the SBS site. So... what's Rollo up to?

Geeze, I wish I knew. We've been down this road before, and, last time, he got off without so much as a slap. When you look at the two brothers, Rollo's clearly got the massive, kingly-build thing going on - very swoon-worthy for those into that sort of thing - but his problem is that he's no Ragnar.

Ragnar is dead brilliant - as cunning and clever as they come, and I just hope, as they all go sailing back to Kattegat, that Rollo remembers all that. And now what's going to happen to Floki - BTW, HUGE BIG SPOILER ALERT IN LITTLE TINY FONT -

(although I can't believe that Ragnar didn't know from the first who had killed Athelstan, can you? I mean, who else was grousing about him besides Floki? I think he's going through what they call in Israel "Jerusalem Syndrome"; I guess this is "Asgard Syndrome", maybe? Not that he thinks he's a god so much, but that he's guided by them - and to his detriment.)

And I will miss Siggy very, very much. She was wonderful, a queen among women, and I do get comfort from the fact that she was met by Frigga as she drowned. Now, I just hope that my Lagartera survives all the coming intrigue *sigh*.

It's gonna be a long time till 2016...

How gorgeous is this?

~* Detectorist Morten Skovsby found the first 3D valkyrie figurine late last year at Hårby on Funen. She wears a floor-length dress and has her hair in the typical knot we’ve seen for instance on the Lady of Sättuna in Kaga, and she’s armed with sword and shield. The interlace decoration on the rear of her dress should permit pretty tight dating once specialists get to see it clearly, but she’s definitely from the Vendel or Viking Periods, and I’d say probably from the 8th/9th/10th century. *~

SPOILERS forthcoming...Don't read this if you care about such things.

The characters are great in this show. Ragnar... Floki... Lagertha...
Can't say I cared much for Athelstan. Guess I'm more a kin spirit of Floki?

So Rollo knows enough French to know his bride hates him? She will be in for one hard ride I suspect.

I liked Athelstan! *pouts* Poor dude! Such crises! Such problems! Captured, crucified, tortured. Now he's into Odin, then not so much, and then back to Jesus - until there's a thunderstorm and he learns how to wield an ax...*sigh* I liked him. I guess they'd gone as far as they could go with him, and maybe he wanted to sing some more...
