British TV shows

Postby Candy Kane » Fri Sep 24, 2010 11:04 am

Once in every lifetime comes a time like this...

I used to absolutely love The Young Ones. Infantile anarchic humour, bands playing in the living room and loopy shenanigans were the key to its success. Four mismatched British students, Neil the depressed hippie, wannabe anarchist Rik, slick spiv* Mike and violent punk Vyvyan live together in a house rented from the crazy landlord Jerzy, who is played by Alexei Sayle.

There's a link to full episodes of the series here: http://veehd.com/search?tag=the+young+ones

I love Vyvyan's piercings - even though they make me cringe.

Oh, it was crazy. "You can't have that, Neil, I just licked it!"

I used to say that to my brother!!

Sadly I was a little too young at the time to appreciate The Young Ones, but I've caught an episode or two over the years, mostly due to hearing "Living Doll" at many a party  I've always thought Rik Mayall was a sexy beast though, so anything he does is great :D

Click on the link above to enjoy full episodes.

They've all gone on to do other things. Rik and Ade Edmondson, who played Vyvyan, did Bottom and Filthy, Rich and Catflap.

Rik was in Blackadder at least once. Oh, I loved Blackadder!

"Blackadder! Blackadder!
De-dum-de-dum-dee-dee!"

(forgot the words) Oh, I love it too. But stateside it's been hit & miss - mostly miss. I do wish BBC America would revive all those shows.

The current daytime run is: Cash in the Attic, How Clean is Your House?, You are What You Eat, Top Gear, Graham Norton, a couple of Gordon Ramsey shows (which always bleeps the F-word and can make it hard to follow, since Gordon uses the word equally across the grammar spectrum), Barking Mad (which I like - getting the tortoise and the goat to share the garden is my favorite, along with pony who bites everybody who tries to ride him), and the occasional Doctor Who, which is shown in no particular order of play.

But I digress...carry on back to the Young Ones :D

I can dig up links to all the shows you want to watch, if you like. That way, you don't have to worry about missing them. :D

Edit: I renamed this thread to make it more general, so we don't go off-topic. We can have a lot of fun with this. :D :yay:

Oh yes, Rik was wonderful as Lord Flashheart in Bladder. That's one of my favorite episodes. I particularly like the fact that he starts to lose his mustache about half way through but I guess they couldn't afford a retake so they let him carry on like a pro ;)

:D I grew up watching it and can probably quote more than I would care to admit  Me and my dad always called it Bladder. I think Prince George was the only one to call him that wasn't he?

I only saw 2 or 3 episodes, all told, and no two were same period.

The Public Broadcast stations where I grew up would put them on, like "Gee look at this!" and then you'd never see them again. That's how I saw The Young Ones, Red Dwarf and Doctor Who for years. Very, very frustrating!

I looked everywhere, then realised I should have gone to StageVu. What other shows would you like me to link?

BTW the tutorials are up on the story archive and linked on the Welcome message and in the Help page, if you want to add a fic.
