The Punishment She deserves by Elizabeth George
#20-something in a series.

I also discovered the "Hamish Macbeth" series of books by M.C. Beaton. Light reading, but amusing and very scottish.

Death of a Dentist, by M. C. Beaton (Hamish Macbeth series), being followed by Death of a Scriptwriter (same author, same series).
