The Candle and the Moth

A moth beheld a candle bright, and sought to woo
The dancing light that gracefully posed, on toe,
The narrow span her taper.

"How lovely are your golden wings! I feel your
Shining warmth from here. You bright, and shine,
And bathe the night with 'witching saffron waves
Of light. We've much in common, thee and me, but
You exceed in grace, my dear. Tread we a measure,
Lady fair?"

He hovered near, and circled round, and found her
Lovely every side. And to fulfill this love he'd
Found, he clasped the flame in fond embrace, and
In a fiery, burst. The candle flame breathed forth
A sigh, and wept a tear o'er her love's demise.

Thus it has always been and be, in future times as
Well as this. We souls will circle the light of
Faith and be consumed, in Passion's kiss.

Jamal-i-Mubarak
(a Portrait of the Sun)

...I wrote this while on Pilgrimage to Haifa, Israel in 1975, hours after seeing the photograph of Baha'u'llah...

I will never forget the tenderness I felt as I gazed upon
Your face - those raven locks around It framed, those eyes
of ancient grace in silent appraisal of me. I read the
anguish on Your brow, the suffering in Your hands - Your
bearing, bent as if with age, betrayed its youthful years.
It was as though perusing a page written with - how shall I say?
I, the slow and halting in speech, describe beauty never seen?
Yet, I see that Face, serene in its pain before me.

Then glory, sudden, beacon-bright crowns this Sorrowful Majesty,
and I behold that Unquenchable Soul, Nabil's Beloved.

You look as if You would speak, Dearest. That regal Head held
high defies the sacrilege of the chain, and Your fingers fear
not their trembling. On those lips hung eternal spring, and
kingdoms balanced in Your piercing glance. Day knows no shadow,
and the universe resounds from Your having been.

O Love! Exceedingly rare and precious, You come - once in every
age, a balm to every hurt. Your breath floats warm upon the
breeze and Your laughter lingers in the valleys.

Praise be to God! I have been to the Mountain, and have met You
across the Bay.

Near W. 117th & Detroit

...Micky was a 'friend' of my then boyfriend back in the day. He had the perfect palate for heroin - at least, that's what I was told. Some time after I ended my relationship, I learned that he had been murdered. His body was found under the Clark Avenue Bridge...

I thought of you, Micky. I
don't know why. That Beatle-George
face came to mind unbidden.
How long has it been?

Do you remember those Fridays
in the kitchen with needles? Or
Linda, who for bed and bread, wed you
only to break away -
just across the hall?

You took me shopping. Trying on the
clothes for my approval, you child-like
capered your glee. It was hard to think
of you dangerous
then.

Ah, you had the gift. The tongue-tip
grain rendered up its purity.
You had the gift.

And you bought, you sold, you lied and
stole, like an elf, an imp, an incubus
too unable to do otherwise.

And when they found you, the bridge
above your head, you bore two smiles -
one crimson 'neath the other, clothed
in your blood.

I remember, Micky.
Remember and weep...

For Anna-Marie

You saw me and called my name…
We hugged. You still look the same
After years of not seeing one
Another. I was with my son,
You with your daughter.
Our bridge has seen much water.
How were you? What was new?
You’re now alone and it’s just you two.
No, I’m not free -
And it’s us three.

You’re older, but so am I.
The sparkle in your eye
Belies the lines in your face, but you still look good.
Once there was kindling, once there was wood
Awaiting the strike of flinty stone.
I stand here, the lonely who’s never alone.

I envy your freedom, you covet my cell;
You’d rather security, but know how well
We breed contempt for those we know.
We hug goodbye but I couldn’t let go.
I don’t want to lose you, but I wouldn’t say so

You’re walking away now, my sometime life –
My dearest, my darling, my never-be wife… 01/02/04

ICARUS
(my Michael)

He flaps like a bird and flies
In his mind. He cries
Like the hawk, and he
Soars. Earth’s jealous gravity
Keeps him down
And all around
People stare at this
Creature rare. I hear a hiss,
A laugh, a taunting word.
It kills me, but he’s not heard
What tears my heart
And rends my guilty soul apart.

I’m told I’m blessed, a chosen one,
That God gave me this special son
Because He knew what I could
Stand. Yet those who say that would
Not be
The ones to trade their place with me. 01/12/04

To the Angel in the Corner…

For Susan
(on what would have been her fiftieth birthday)

It’s not only the season passing
That brings
Out the sorrow in me,
Or that you’re ten for eternity.

God’s little girl…

In your eyes I saw the world
Above the mouth born to miss
That first of many a lover’s kiss.

I turn on the light, put cup to my right
And try to say with ink and pen
How much I miss you, baby. When
Will I visit? I can’t say…
You’re buried so very far away,
And I don’t know.

T’was jealous lead that took you out.
Blew your life, snuffed the candle out.
I got my only A in math that day.
In honor of your sacrifice,
I’ve scores of F’s, and they suffice.

I miss you, blue-eyed golden child.
I miss your laughter. If years were miles,
We’re hundreds of thousands of distance apart,

But forever my darling and asleep in my heart. 6/12/04

“The purpose of justice is the appearance of unity among men.” — Bahá’u’lláh

justice is not here

justice is not here.
He's long gone out of town.
He's taken the northern path away
from we dustees on the ground.

His jaunty grin has vanished
and we are all bereft.
In its darkened place are shadows
of the cobwebs He has left.

The best beloved's flown bye-bye
on wings of gloss-a-mere,
And makes mockery of unity
for justice is not here. 5/29/14

Toys

Whenever our autistic son comes to visit, he refuses to leave until his father and I have gone back into the house. He's thrown tantrums if ever we've tried to leave before he and his caregiver have.

I'm all done with our playing.
It's time we go alone.
But before I do, with kiss from you,
I make sure that you've gone home.

You must walk up the walkway.
You must climb every stair
You cannot sit on the stoop one bit,
Or I'll tear out my hair.

You must not drive from my presence,
Or I won't know where you are.
Now, close the lid - be completely hid,
Or I can't get in the car.

I cannot leave the carpark
When I don't know that you're safe.
It's only my way of ending our day;
I care, therefore I chafe.

You tossed me when I was little,
And rowed me like the boat.
My first slide was down your thighs,
Your knees were my first moat.

Now I'm too big for swinging,
I've grown too old to play.
But, dear old blocks, you need your box
So I must put you away.

And there you'll sit, till next time,
Awaiting on the couch,
Til I tread your floor, and knock your door,
And come to take you out. 5/29/14
