Inspired by Limyaael, whose 'rants' I've linked to in the 'Writers on writing' thread, I produced some essays/rambles a long time ago about specific concepts in writing, how they're badly implemented in some works of fiction, and how I think such pitfalls can be avoided. The focus is on genre fiction, particularly science fiction, but most of my remarks can probably be generalized.
Character development - avoiding cliches and integrating it into a plot-driven story (a continuation of the ideas in the previous post).
Themes and Issues - putting Big Ideas in a story without turning it into a trite author-tract.
