Preparing for Sandy

Postby Padfoot » Mon Oct 29, 2012 6:10 pm

Is anyone in the area where Sandy is supposed to hit? If so, I hope you're all doing OK. We keep our fingers crossed over here! :ghug:

Oh, you are such a sweetie! Thanks, honey! We've had a few gusts here (I'm in southwestern Ohio), and it's not supposed to be anything like what they're expecting along the east coast.

I just heard that Sandy's made landfall (8:07PM, EST) - earlier than anticipated, and with hurricane force winds.

Yes, we've been following the news here. Considering its force, it's incredible that relatevely few people (according to the news) are missing (so far, pray the number won't increase much!!) . I think preparation/evacuation plans worked out so far. Of course, the destruction is immense.

Yeah :( , it's awful. And I never used to think how deadly trees were until a friend of mine was killed by a falling limb. You don't think how heavy they can be, especially from height. 5 million folks are without power - it's staggering, but the east coast is the most densely populated part over here, so it was bound to be bad. Breaks my heart...

This picture is very telling about how many are now without power on the east coast. Someone said that it looks like the Gulf of Illinoise. :(

I hope this help people to see that we do need the Federal Government. It's one hell of a lesson, though...

Are there people who think a federal government is obsolete?

I'm sad to say it's falling on deaf ears, Shireling. Most of my Libertarian friends are saying we should just leave the victims to fend for themselves and that living in a dangerous area is a bad idea. Okay, fine, but where will they go? Tornado Alley? The earthquake-prone west coast? What about the wildfires?

There are few places that are truly safe, though obviously it is wise to take precautions by not living outside of a levee, etc.

People need to turn to one another for support, and the good news is, it's happening. Occupy have been canoeing into stricken areas with supplies. Marathon runners are helping out as best they can. Even Chris Christie is being respectful to the president and doing his job as well as he can. I'm starting to like him.

Candy, same here. I was shocked when I heard people talk about it. :/

It's what happens when you don't think for yourself. Libertarianism has come to the fore as a result of the Tea Party. Behind the rhetoric are the major corporations who want to break down the environmental protections that keep them from turning America into this:

http://news1.ghananation.com/internatio ... rrels.html

It's easy to do this when you've convinced people that socialists are taking their hard-earned tax money and giving it to layabouts. Then jerk your thumb at the line of unemployed people drawing the dole and tell them that the socialists are stopping the employers from employing people because they're all concerned about the little birdies and the fishy wishies. Once you've got them riled up, the voters barge into the polling stations to vote against their own interests.

To know whether you're being manipulated or not, you have only to look to see who the foremost proponents of your favoured philosophy are and how they spend their time. If they're horrible polluters who have no care or concern for the environment and the people who live there, you're batting for the wrong team.

Yesterday, my husband and I went to a commemoration event. It was 100 years ago yesterday that 'Abdu'l-Baha, the Interpreter of the Baha'i Faith, came to Cincinnati, Ohio on His way back to, what was then, Palestine. His main message was racial harmony - actually, the unification of the entire human race - and in the course of the program, one of the speakers pointed out that the President, an African-American, was speaking just a few miles away from us, downtown, right as we were meeting.

I don't mind telling you that I'm hoping for the best and preparing for the worst, come tomorrow, which is how I've been getting by. I know miracles do happen, because my dad, who was terrified of President Obama, is now scared out of his wits by the other guy and regrets ever having doubted him. That is no small thing, coming from my father. I am so proud of him, because he's overcome his racism - at least to this extent - and for a man in his eighties, just about unheard of.

Well, what will be, will be...
