He made Dracula creepy and horrible, a parasite who could manipulate people at will, but would ultimately destroy them. That's what I liked about it.
I'm not so keen on the sexy vampires who litter our cultural landscape these days. They make you want to be one!

we went into what was once part of one of the four towers of dublin castle, only one remains standing. as with all things in the UK/Ireland and probably most of Europe something has always been built over the top of something else, it seems.

No; I cannot abide today's angsty, sparkly, sanitised Emo vampires. If you'll excuse the pun, I find them completely bloodless.
But even Stoker's vampires were hugely 'sexed up' when compared to the medieval vampire legends; barely sentient animated corpses thought of like other disgusting bloodsuckers - leeches, ticks and bats. These vampires were vile, unattractive parasites that spread disease and death.
What's more frightening - the idea of some sparkly Ladyboy crying all over you while you sleep, or waking up to find a festering corpse lapping at an open wound in your throat?
Actually, now I think about it...

Ooh, GRUESOME! And that's how I like it. Yeah, there was a scene in the book where Harker finds Drac bloated and replete with blood, a thin stream drying on the corner of his mouth... GROSS!
And, I think, one of the best scenes.

I read the book some years ago, when I was at the hospital.... Seriously, that book gave me the creeps. I still can't decide whether I liked it or not. But it WAS a fascinating read.

It was the best book he ever wrote
. Maybe the only one he ever wrote, I can't remember, but it's like Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. I mean, like, f that's all you've ever written, make it stick.

Indeed! I'd say, "Mission accomplished."

Indeed. Whether one likes it or not, it's indeed a book that sticks.
Started with "North and South" now, and I'm already deep into the story. It's one of these books that captures me from page one. The characters are very lively, I like that a lot.
