Oh; I forgot the 'Solomon Kane' stories! I bought the anthology of the original stories by Robert E. Howard, and an anthology of the late 70s pulp comics versions.

They are brilliant, but then I really enjoyed the 'Conan' stories too.

The 'Solomon Kane' stories actually have some effective horror moments in them - particularly 'Skulls in the Stars' (that title still makes no sense to me!) - and the style of writing is fast-paced and unpretentious. I sometimes forget that Howard was writing these stories around the same time as the professor was writing 'Lord of the Rings'...

I'll have to check those out. By "Conan," do you mean Conan the Barbarian, or something else?

No, no 'Conan the Barbarian'. Sorry - I wasn't clearer. I ploughed through every single Conan book written (that I'm aware of) during a 2 week grounding as a teenager during the summer holidays!

Wish I'd known about the Solomon Kane stories then. Problem is though, even all added together there's less material than a typical Stephen King novella.

I really am confusing the issue here aren't I?! I was referring to 'Conan the Barbarian'! Sorry Candy - me and my odd turn of phrase...

I remember reading all of the Conan the Barbarian books along with all of the Tarzan, Barsoomian, Venus, and Pelucidar books by Edgar Rice Burroughs way back in the 1960's in my early teen years. They were quick reads and interesting at the time.

I read a book called Jolie Blon's Bounce by James Lee Burke. It takes place in south Louisiana around New Iberia. It is a detective story for the most part but there were some supernatural and horror elements to the story that realy made my hair stand up in some cases. Maybe because I know some folks that dabble in the kind of stuff described in the book. :um:

Bloody hell! The only other person I know who has read it! Wow! :thud:

I got it religiously from Issue 1 (which came with a pair of plastic Dracula Fangs, IIRC?). I was GUTTED when they just ended it suddenly.

I loved the 'Dracula' and '13th Floor' stories.. I actually found a website with scans of nearly every single issue on a few years back; I'll have a look for a link for you!

Thanks, mate. I'd love to see Hookjaw again.

Does anyone remember Satana the Devil's Daughter. There were a lot of comics out back in the day with stuff like that on.

'Uncle Terry' in 'Scream!' was pretty messed up for a kid's comic, as I recall.

I vaguely remember Satana... I think it was the costume!

My goodness, can you imagine any lass you know walking around in a poloneck slashed to the bellly button? I bet she taped it down!

There was one episode of Hookjaw that stood out for me: the Acapulco diver who ended up doing a perfect swan dive into the shark's open mouth. CHOMP!
