Your latest musical discovery

Postby resoundingjoy » Mon Oct 25, 2010 7:49 pm

I read a lot of music blogs but tend to be a little slow on the uptake with the latest music (not that Billboard top 40 stuff, but interesting, thoughtful, creative music like you hear on NPR). What are some of your latest discoveries?

I'll start off with a few (and admit that a lot of these come from recommendations from my bf, who has a better ear that I do):

Mumford & Sons. I promise I did hear this song before it was used on SGU.

Paper Aeroplanes. I think I found them through a blog. This isn't their best song, but I couldn't find a good link for "Take It Easy."

The Civil Wars. I remember first hearing Joy Williams when she was a heavily marketed teen Christian pop diva. She's come a long ways since then.

... why yes, I am a sucker for melancholy singer/songwriters.

+1 for Mumford & Sons! Got their CD in mid 2009, and had the joy of seeing them live at the Brisbane Laneway Festival last January. They flew out of wintery London and landed in steamy summer Brisbane, and despite the jet-lag & rapid change of climate, they played an awesome show! There isn't a bad song on that album. I like Thistle & Weeds, Winter Winds, & Dust Bowl Dance, and of course the 'singles Little Lion Man & The Cave.

I've been enjoying Laura Marling a lot of late too.

I've been in a bit of a rut lately with finding new music. I've loved so many awesome bands for so long it's made me really picky about new stuff. I've made some really good re-discoveries and discoveries of new things/ things i'd never heard from bands i already liked though.

Finnish pop-rock girl band Indica:
Older song:

Newer song:

Not my usual style but they do it so well and Finnish is pretty! I'm not sure what to think of their english songs.

German folk-metal band Equilibrium:
I've known about them for a while but i only recently discovered this song and i can't stop listening to it! It's got the harsh vocals though which I realize are not everyone's thing, but the instrumentals, especially the intro are brilliant!
You've got to change the world,
and use this chance to be heard.

But dancing is fine too :P

From Townsville Queensland ... The Middle East.

Here is the recorded release...

They also must be Tolkien fans, as they have a song called 'Beleriand'

The closest I can come to a new discovery is this from South Korea. Some very impressive guitar work.

This one is a guilty pleasure, but they are quite good considering that they have no professional musical training. I also really like the video editing.

A nice acoustic rendition from the Stonefield girls. Unfortunately I think the talent lies with two of the four sisters, but time will tell.

My latest re-discovery has been early 60's Bluesgrass and old time Country music.

My latest musical discovery is that I love jazz and the blues...and some swing.

I just heard the coolest song! It was by the group Rivertribe! It has a Celtic sound to it, but incorporated a didgery-doo!!!

Really liked this song since it came out last year. Reminded me of a youthful love that went off back in the day.

Hubby and I went to see a Frankie Valli tribute band today- call themselves "Let's Hang On." It was a really good show - a lot of fun and they sang the falsetto and 4 part harmonies well.
