Site Graphics/Theme

Postby Shuggy » Tue Mar 23, 2010 9:59 am

So are we going full-out 'Geek', or leaning more towards Fantasy?

I personally think that if we're gonna have a site banner, or front page, any graphics should be a mixture of wizards, dragons, Hobbits, Superheroes, Iconic sci-fi imagery (USS Enterprise, etc), and some iconic Computer game characters. This sets out our stall early on - as soon as someone arrives on the site.

What do people think? And could anyone do such a thing? :D

My graphics-fu is weak, so I'm taking volunteers lol.

I do like the idea of putting a bit of everything into the top banner though :)

I like the idea of Gandalf riding off into the Horsehead Nebula astride his mighty space broomstick, the USS Shadowprise 2000, and narrowly avoiding collision with The Great A'Tuin. However, my drawing skills amount to this, so I'm afraid I cannot help you with the rendering of this theme.

Liz, you have some nice stuff there. You even have a Frodo at the Ford.
The one picture of the tree by the water from Tom Knight's Elephant's Lullaby in the Digital Art category is especially impressive. :)

Haha, yay!
Thanks for all the compliments guys :)
I think we should have a poll of sorts and figure out what specific elements (Gandalf, the Enterprise, Spiderman, etc.)/layout everyone's in favor of. Let me know how you guys want to do this :D

My personal opinion - I wouldn't want to dictate or stifle your creativity. You've got a general idea, I would only suggest that any images should be iconic of their genre - other than that - go mad with it!

Tardis! I know you don't really have Dr Who in American land, but it's an iconic part of british sci-fi, and mainstream too. When we've got a title we can build that style in to. What do we think about font? It's difficult to know whether to go for a kinda sci-fi futuristic font, or a curly fantasy script...

Actually Dr. Who has been available on TV in the USA for 30 years or more. A little Tardis stuck somewhere in the graphic would be good. :)

Remember a few years ago when some corporation (Virgin, maybe) had a large picture with a bunch of different representations of horror movies and you had to try to find the appropriate representation and guess which movie it was representing then list the movies? Something like that would be kinda neat, with a bunch of different symbols representing different books, movies, games, etc. hidden and stashed away in graphic that has an overall theme of sci-fi/fantasy. Not overdone or violating any copyrights, but like with some easter eggs hidden in it so when you find them you get a little happy jolt. Just an idea. :)
