What's in a (site) name?

Postby MsBrandybuck » Sat Apr 17, 2010 6:54 pm

Naming a website can have certain rewards- indulge me while I relate a story.

Back in the day, Ringbearer was part of a site called, "Fandom" which were a bunch of small fan boards all daisy-chained together. We each had our own front page for news and then the forums.
As I recall there was a site for Harry Potter, one about Star Trek, I think one for Xena:Warrier Princess, etc.

One of the interesting features was that a user could have registered on one of the sites, but could jump to any site (via a menu at the bottom of each main page) and automatically be able to post on any of those forums under your username. On occasion I had jumped over to the Star Trek board and had made a few friends there.

When Fandom was bought out and went through a massive overhaul, serveral of the sites jumped off onto their own site- the Trek site being one.
They expanded to encompass sci-fi in general, as the Trek franchise was losing traction.

The board experienced highs and lows, much like we did, and while they had many members their core posting group dwindled. To coutneract this entropy, the site owner revised the site- moved the hosting a couple of times, and generally tried to do what he could to keep things going and keep membership up.

In one of the earliest revisions after leaving Fandom was the name change to Sy-Fy Portal. Fast-forward to early this year. Many of you have doubtless heard of the cable channel known as Sci-Fi Network. They recently revamped their brand and came up with a 'clever' and 'unique' name for themselves and now want to be known as the "Sy-Fy Network."
Along with this re-branding they want to put something on the internet- and what better name to go with than Sy-Fy Portal!

But wait! Sy-Fy Portal already exists- and has done so for about 10 years- on the internet! But the Network REALLY REALLY wants that name..... so they BOUGHT it from the site owner, Michael Hinman, for an undisclosed amount of money that Michael has described as, "Significant."

Anyway- Michael still has his 'little' sci-fi board on the internet that he has renamed Airlock Alpha, part of a little web ring known as TheBlipNetwork that also hosts Rabid Doll Horror. Between the two of them they cover all things sci-fi and horror.

Anyway- take a look at Michael Hinman's little sci-fi board now:

So- what's in a name? Anyone want to snap up domain name,"Sy-Fy Universe." LOL! ;)

So, MsB, what you're saying is that we need to come up with a snazzy name which some network will offer us millions of dollars for in a few years?

Hmmm, so every name I can think of includes the word "fantasy". We should grab one and then try to sell it to the porn industry for big $$$$.
