Site Name

I suggested The 'G-SITE' (The Geek Shall Inherit The Earth!

Cassie quite liked it, but it has to be something we all agree on. My thinking behind it was that a purely Tolkein sounding name instantly paints the site with a certain preconception, and JRR is old hat now to all but the most rabid fans. 'The Geek Shall Inherit The Earth' (G-SITE) gives us an ability to cover all manner of geeky topics without locking us down to a specific subject/theme.

What do we think?

a purely Tolkein sounding name instantly paints the site with a certain preconception

And 'The Geek Shall Inherit the Earth' doesn't? :P
Seems like a name like that will keep away or chase away more folks, or attract folks looking for some porn. G-SITE, G-Spot, G-String
I agree that a purely Tolkein sounding name would not be right, but the site should not be labled as 'Geek', either.

Secondary Worlds could be a choice. It is something that JRRT and other fantasy as well as Sci-Fi and speculative fiction/history writers explored and still expore today.

I use G-SITE as an abbreviation; the site would be called 'The Geek Shall Inherit The Earth', with the abbreviation secondary.

I will rephrase - Giving the site a Tolkein-themed name would instill a preconception we are trying to avoid, and instantly put many off as they would think the site itself would be Tolkien-centric.

'Geek' will also instill a preconception; that this is a place you can geek out about sci-fi, films, comics, fantasy, computers - all things geek!

There's nothing wrong with being labelled a 'Geek' these days; that term is no longer used negatively, and is interchangeble with 'fan' (itself short for 'fanatic'). Most film-geeks, computer-geeks, sci-fi-geeks are proud to be called such.

G-SITE works for me. I really don't care. I'll be here no matter what it's called.

I think that goes for most of us old 'uns, PB. I think 'The Geek Shall Inherit The Earth' (G-SITE) simply projects fun; it's lively and it covers a lot of bases.
No offense meant to TC, but 'Secondary Worlds' seems too fantasy oriented and - the more I think about it - screams "We're dry and we take ourselves FAR too seriously!" But that is just me.

Nothing wrong with a good bit of underlying innuendo.

Google results:
There is a web design company called Gsite, who already have g-site.com. tgsite.com is sat on, but tgsite.org currently returns no results.

As for 'the geek shall inherit the earth', it's a song title, and links to a bunch of news articles about how awesome geekery is, but that's about it (as far as page 1 goes anyway).

NO WAY!

I honestly thought I made that up!

Could we get away with using that, if it was the popular choice?

Any play that easy on a biblical verse has to have been done before! The song seems to be by a band called 'electric funstuff' which I've definitely never heard of!

And it came to me in a dream too....

Damned easy-target biblical verses! :x

I don't know anything about licences/rights/fair usage - is it worth even pursuing any further as a site name?

Well, I don't really know a huge amount about it myself, but having looked a little closer into it, it seems to be that electric funstuff is a software company, who have also produced some random songs. http://www.electricfunstuff.com/songdow ... _Earth.mp3 is the relevant song. I doesn't seem to be a major label deal at all - and they're almost certainly not the first people to come up with the pun.

In that case, I say "Bugger 'em." :|

Googling is legal research. No jury in the world would convict us!
